Osaka Cooking School

Whenever we travel outside the US, Rosemary likes to arrange for a cooking school. This time it was Saeko’s instructions for miso soup and sushi.

Getting there was a two hour adventure on four train lines during rush hour. We went just one stop on our local train to Kyoto Station. No “Packers” we’re used, but the car was very full, you can see.

Our trip sounds simple, but bear in mind that there are nine train lines serving the city of Kyoto. It is easy to get on the wrong one, or go in the wrong direction.

From Kyoto station we went just 35 miles to impressive Osaka station (above). Beautiful place.

For any train buffs, I would add that there are four, parallel tracks between Kyoto and Osaka. Outside tracks are dedicated each way to express trains; the inside to locals. There are few freight trains, and I don’t know what tracks they use.

From downtown Osaka we had two more trains to the nice home of our chef instructor, who met us at the train station.

Saeko was delightful; a patient and skilled instructor. I joked about whether my craftsmanship might qualify me for a job at our favorite, local Japanese restaurant.

I doubt it, but it tasted good anyway, in spite of zero eye appeal. Lewis
